The team at Corby + Fellas wishes you a very Merry Christmas and prosperity throughout the coming year. Thank you to all of our customers, friends and associates for their continued support. We look forward to working with all of you in the years to come.

Rather than sending Christmas Cards we are donating to Norfolk and Waveney Mind Charity again this year.

Press release from Klondyke group:

After the devastating fire at our garden centre back in April 2018, we are absolutely thrilled to announce that our brand new Strikes Garden Centre and Restaurant at Stokesley is now open.

Over the last year we have been operating from a temporary building whilst the new facility was built. Now we have moved into our brand new home, offering 3500sqm of retail space with a fantastic 300 seater restaurant; inhouse bakery; craft and clothing departments.

Christmas is on full display in the new garden centre; with five stunning themes; a Christmas tree forest; lighting shop; Christmas miniature village and our very own singing reindeer!!

Chief Executive David Yardley commented “After the terrible low of losing our garden centre in last year’s fire, we are all on a high to open the doors to our loyal customers and provide them with this fantastic new garden centre. We would again like to express the biggest thank you to our customers for their support and patience over the last year whilst the build took place. This goes to all our staff at Stokesley and surrounding centres as well, for their hard work and commitment in getting the new garden centre open’”

Welsh retailer launches VIP scheme
17th October 2019
By Sandra Pearce PBW

A leading Welsh independent pet retailer is launching a VIP scheme to reward loyal customers with more creature comforts.

PetPlace is launching its PetPlace Plus scheme in which members receive offers tailored to their buying habits, as well as free dog washes for their canine companions, complementary coffee once a month and early information on upcoming events and free advice sessions.

Managing director Sion Pritchard said PetPlace – which has stores in Ruthin, Chirk, Mold, Llangefni, Abergele and a head office in Mochdre – wants to reward shoppers and their pets.

He said: “We have loyal customers across North Wales and beyond who have been with us for many years. We want to give back to them but also identify the areas we can grow, whether that be increasing sales in a particular area or introducing a new service.

“The more people who join PetPlace Plus, the more opportunity we have to supply a range of products at a reduced rate for members and introduce discounts on the most popular lines.”

He added: “Most importantly – especially in Abergele, where we had a store revamp two years ago – we want to thank the customers who come back again and again, because we truly appreciate and value their support.”

BUSY YEAR

PetPlace has had a busy year, taking on new staff and achieving a five-star hygiene rating at its revolutionary coffee bar, play park and cinema in Abergele.

The company had earlier also been presented with a prestigious Investors in People Silver Award.

Staff are no strangers to support themselves; employees from every branch will be taking part in the Chirk Castle Dark Run on October 19, a four-kilometre challenge to raise funds for Hope House Children’s Hospices.

The business has also sponsored the recent North Wales Young Business Awards, Conwy Business Awards and the Go North Wales Tourism Awards, taking place in November.

And with the PetPlace rebrand to be rolled-out across the other stores from 2020, things will only get busier for Sion and the team.

“After launching the new play park and coffee bar we knew it was going to be busy, but this year has exceeded all expectations,” he said.

“To be given a five-star hygiene rating is especially pleasing because everyone has worked hard to make it a success, and the response from the community has been amazing.”

Sion added: “The aim now is to build on momentum towards Christmas before unveiling new ideas and developments in 2020 – watch this space!”

Boyd Douglas-Davies appointed as HTA President

GCR Joe Wilkinson:

The AGM of the HTA, which took place at Glee, saw the appointment of Boyd Douglas-Davies as HTA President.

Boyd Douglas-Davies, CEO of Hillview Garden Centres, has taken over the Presidency from Adam Taylor of Taylors Bulbs who has come to the end of his two-year tenure in the role and moves to the role of Immediate Past PresidentBoyd has over 30 years of experience in garden retail. After training at Pershore College Boyd spent 20 years at Webbs of Wychbold during which time the business continuously grew and was recognised as one of the UK’s best garden centres. As CEO of Hillview Garden Centres he operates eight garden centres across middle England. A well-known figure in the industry Boyd is a trustee of the Greenfingers Charity and founder of Garden Re-Leaf Day.

The AGM also saw the following appointments:

  • The ratification of James Barnes as Chairman.
  • The ratification of the re-appointment of Bob Hewitt as a Director of the Board.

Immediate HTA Past President, Adam Taylor, comments,

“I feel extremely proud and privileged to have been able to serve the association over the last two years which has seen great change, both internally and externally. It has been an exciting, occasionally challenging, but always immensely rewarding experience and I would like to thank the HTA Board and Committees for their support, along with the team at Horticulture House. I would like to welcome Boyd to the President’s position and wish him all the best for his term of office.”

As outlined in the Annual Review there have been many accomplishments throughout the year. Mostly notably, three key areas include:

  • Plant health and biosecurity – leading the plant health agenda by launching the Plant Health Management Standard and ‘Plant Healthy’ toolkit.
  • Recyclable plant pots – driving forward the introduction of recyclable plant pots potentially saving 8,000 tonnes of plastic going to landfill.
  • Industry value – for the first time quantifying the value and contribution of the industry to enable us to raise our profile with Government and decision makers.

HTA President, Boyd Douglas-Davies, comments,

“I feel that this is a very exciting time for the industry – yes there are lots of challenges but with this also comes lots of opportunity. Sustainability is a key area that the industry is working hard on which is hugely important. Let’s not forget we are producing a great product in the shape of plants or ‘clean air machines’. We need to shout about this from the roof tops to ensure that the buyers of the future continue to come to us for great products that have a positive impact on the environment.”He adds, “I look forward to taking the association through the next two years and encourage all members to play an active role in helping to shape the organisation for the future – ensuring the needs of the industry evolve with the challenges and opportunities that come our way.”

Members from across the sector who attended the AGM received the finance reports and annual review and re-appointed BDO as auditors. With regard to membership subscriptions for 2020, an average percentage increase of 3% across all bands, in line with inflation, was ratified.

Dougal Philip, Vice President of the Benevolent Fund, provided a report on activity across the year and encouraged all to help raise awareness of this valuable and underused resource which is available to HTA members and their staff.

The minutes of the AGM will be available to members on the HTA website in due course.
