The new indoor play area at Tong Garden Centre has created 39 new jobs for local people.

Grass Hoppers indoor play has recruited 26 permanent and 13 seasonal team members. They’ll work in the state of the art 15,000 square feet indoor play area and the new 200 seater Woody’s Kitchen.

The indoor play roles include receptionists, a party supervisor and a play supervisor.

15 of the 39 will work in Woody’s Kitchen. It’ll serve a selection of pizzas, paninis, barista made coffee and 40 flavours of ice cream.

Tong’s appointed Head of People and Culture, Neil Barwise said: “We’re thrilled that our latest investment has created 39 new jobs. We’re delighted with the calibre of people that we have attracted. We wish them all a long, happy and fulfilling career at Tong.

“We used a video to recruit the catering team members for Woody’s Kitchen and our 300 seater restaurant. We’re delighted with the results.”

Tong’s owners have invested more than £2 million to create the new indoor play area. It includes a large pre-school soft play area, a role play zone, new party rooms, a play frame and a sports court.

The new indoor play adjoins the outdoor Grass Hoppers adventure playground that over a quarter of a million children have visited since 2016.

Praise for Corby and Fellas EPOS system
GTN Xtra Promotion

The Corby and Fellas EPOS system has received praise from Mark Winchester, Managing Director of Blackbrooks Garden Centres.

“After investing in a system by one of your competitors and having the unfortunate realisation that things were not working as smoothly as they should, I decided to look for a more efficient system and more reliable technical support,” Mark told Corby and Fellas.

“So, after a brief conversation with Alan McCammon and a subsequent presentation from Corby + Fellas, I decided to bite the proverbial bullet and install C&F across the group and I have to say even with the deadlines imposed on your team by myself, the installation process went without a hitch. In fact, I could not have hoped for a better nor smother installation process, so thank you for that.

“Your system has proven to be robust and intuitive enabling our operators to adapt and adopt almost immediately. It is also worth noting the relaxed attitude my till operatives now have due to the confidence they have in their abilities to navigate and rely on their till. This in turn has had a positive effect with the whole team and customers alike.

“I now look forward to making better use of the back-office functionality that your system provides which I have no doubt will trigger cost savings and efficiencies to my business.”

It is with pleasure that I write to endorse the Corby and Fellas EPOS system.

Now that the temperature is rising its time to think about saving water in the garden and the automatic watering systems from Hozelock are just the thing. There are leaky hoses to lay just underneath the soil surface of your herbaceous beds, sprinklers for the lawn and individual drip irrigation for the containers and hanging baskets.

If you are continually forgetting to water your houseplants then consider cactus and succulents, they are not all vicious and spiky and they range from soft pale blue to dark green. They don’t mind a baking hot spot and forgive you if you forget to water.

Save water and drink gin. We have plenty of flavours to choose from in the Food Hall here in store, from such artisan producers as 6 O’clock Gin, Lakes Distillary, Mint Drinks Company and Lakeland Liqueurs.

Ever wanted a pet sheep? We have masses of garden sheep in stock priced from £6.99 to £89.99, they don’t need feeding, watering, exercising, worming or their hooves trimmed! Made from ceramic, resin and slate; the small £12.99 slate sheep are due in around mid-August.

This week’s recipe is the delicious, super-quick King Prawns with chilli, garlic and lime, ideal as a starter for your guests to nibble on while they wait for the main event. We cooked them in the Weber GBS wok but they can just as easily be cooked on a griddle plate or in a veg basket. https://www.hayesgardenworld.co.uk/blog/how-cook-king-prawns-chilli-garlic-and-lime-weber-gbs-wok

Don’t forget we are demonstrating the Kamodo Joe BBQs in store on Sunday 21st July; it’s ongoing from 11 – 4 and there’ll be nibbles and tips on getting the best from your grill.

There’s still time to grab a bargain in our outdoor furniture sale; whether it’s a simple table and chair for enjoying your morning coffee or a large dining set for entertaining family and friends we have something to suit: https://www.hayesgardenworld.co.uk/category/garden/garden-furniture/garden-furniture-sale ONLINE ONLY

Welcome to our newest member of the Corby + Fellas family Sam Henden. Sam is from Costessey where he studied at Ormiston Victory Academy and Sixth Form. He was previously working for his family business at Broadland Sports Club and is looking forward to developing his skills and becoming a valuable member of the team here at C+F.

Now that it’s full summer the garden should be looking at its best and there’s nothing that screams summer as much as the nation’s favourite flower, the rose. David Austin and Peter Beales roses are renowned for their robust nature coupled with exquisite scent and a long flowering season. Plant in a large container close to your seating area to appreciate their full fragrance.

Climbers don’t just have to be grown up a wall or fence; add height to your herbaceous border with a climber growing up an obelisk. There are obelisks to suit any garden scheme from minimalist iron or aluminium to rustic woven willow and the choice of suitable plants is endless, just steer away from rambler roses.

Now that the herbaceous border is in full bloom you can identify any gaps; the garden centre is full of plants in flower so you can see exactly what you are getting. If you need any help just ask one of the Outdoor Plants team and they will be happy to help.

Add a touch of calm to your outdoor space with the sound of running water, it doesn’t need to be a monumental fountain there are lots of small self-contained features, from a natural looking pile of rocks to a more formal fountain. Constructed from resin they are light enough to move and will withstand frost if emptied over winter.

This weekend why not try cooking the Sunday roast on the grill, and nothing says traditional Sunday dinner like this leg of lamb with mint sauce. It’s cooked on the Traeger wood pellet grill but can just as easily be cooked low and slow on any BBQ:
